PBS’s Mystery!’s most-watched detective returns in two all-new movies; DVD release coincides with the mysteries’ television debut

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S POIROT
The Movie Collection, Set 4
Debuts on DVD July 7, 2009

Starring fan-favorite David Suchet as Hercule Poirot

Silver Spring, MD — Featuring two all-new movies starring David Suchet, Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Movie Collection, Set 4 debuts on DVD from Acorn Media on July 7, 2009. The DVD release coincides with the debut of the new mysteries on PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery! in late June 2009. Featuring new adaptations of Agatha Christie’s Mrs. McGinty’s Dead and Cat Among the Pigeons, the 3-volume DVD includes an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary about the series with the stars and filmmakers ($49.99, www.AcornOnline.com).

David Suchet returns as Hercule Poirot—the Belgian sleuth of unsurpassed deductive powers and peerless viewer appeal—in two fresh adaptations of Christie classics.

Mrs. McGinty’s Dead—With help from mystery novelist and old friend Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker, My Family), Poirot tries to save a man from hanging for a murder he might not have committed. As the famous sleuth tracks down the real killer, he finds his own life at risk. Guest stars include Paul Rhys (Vincent & Theo), Amanda Root (Persuasion), Siân Phillips (I, Claudius), and Emma Amos (The Last Detective).

Cat Among the Pigeons—At the Meadowbank School, Miss Bulstrode (Harriet Walter, Atonement) counts girls from England’s finest families among her young charges. And she treats them all as equals—even the royalty, like Princess Shaista of Ramat, a political refugee under constant threat from revolutionaries in her country. Yet, to the headmistress’s friend Hercule Poirot, the school seems a world in microcosm, full of “hopes, dreams, fears, and secrets.” The famous detective delves into those secrets after a vicious murder shocks the students and staff. Guest stars include Natasha Little (Vanity Fair), Claire Skinner (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Susan Wooldridge (The Jewel in the Crown), Anton Lesser (Miss Potter), and Katie Leung (the Harry Potter movies)

EXCLUSIVE BONUS PROGRAM: Super Sleuths, a behind-the-scenes documentary, exploring the widespread appeal of Agatha Christie’s famed detective; featuring interviews with stars David Suchet, Philip Jackson (Chief Inspector Japp), Hugh Fraser (Captain Hastings), and Pauline Moran (Miss Lemon), as well as longtime producer Brian Eastman, director Ed Bennett, writer Anthony Horowitz (Foyle’s War), among others.

Poirot has aired on ITV1 in the U.K. since 1989 and on PBS and A&E in the U.S. The series has adapted sixty-one of Agatha Christie’s novels and short stories with four new episodes currently in production.

On June 2, Acorn Media re-packaged twenty-seven episodes from the classic Poirot series in The Classic Collection, Sets 1-3 (episodes from 1989-1993), and 9 feature-length movies in The Movie Collection, Sets 1-3 (1990-1996). The DVD 3-volume boxed sets are $49.99 (www.AcornOnline.com).
