Silver Spring, MD — The iconic series now in a value-priced collection, On the Road with Charles Kuralt: Americana Collection arrives on DVD from Acorn Media on October 11, 2011, with more than 200 classic segments. Award-winning journalist Charles Kuralt became a household name for his On the Road segments, first airing on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, and then for his stint as the first host of CBS News Sunday Morning. Beginning in 1967, Kuralt and his small CBS television crew traversed America’s byways by motor home in search of the unusual and overlooked stories of ordinary people from the nation’s back roads. The resulting segments provide a quirky and uplifting snapshot of everyday life worthy of celebration. This DVD 9-volume boxed set includes more than 200 segments and a 55 min. interview with longtime Kuralt and On the Road cameraman, Isadore (“Izzy”) Bleckman (www.AcornOnline.com, $79.99). Acorn Media previously released these episodes in On the Road, Sets 1-3 as DVD 3-vol. boxed sets ($39.99 each).

During the 20 years Kuralt wandered America’s back roads, beginning in 1967, he and his small crew logged more than a million miles and wore out six motor homes. For his heartfelt reporting on the lives of everyday people, Kuralt won an Emmy® and three Peabody Awards and became celebrated in his nearly four-decade career as a breath of fresh air in a world of endlessly gloomy news stories.

A tireless champion of the everyman, Kuralt found something interesting about everyone he met. Abandoning the interstate for country roads, he discovered hundreds of uniquely American characters, reporting on singing mailmen, horse traders, cowboys, traffic cops, and a Russian man who waited 43 years to thank the American soldiers who saved his life. Time capsules of a bygone era, these enlightening and inspiring stories are reminders of what makes America great. They remain deeply meaningful, poignant, and truthful today.

Originally compiled for broadcast by the Travel Channel, each episode in this set contains 3-5 On the Road segments. Kuralt’s On the Road pieces define authentic Americana, celebrating everyday, extraordinary, and unsung individuals.

BONUS FEATURES: 55 min. interview with Isadore Bleckman, Kuralt’s longtime cameraman; About On the Road, Road Updates, and a biography of Charles Kuralt.
