Silver Spring, MD — Showcasing more homespun vignettes of everyday life, On the Road with Charles Kuralt, Set 3, debuts on DVD from Acorn Media on October 26, 2010, following the widespread success of On the Road, Sets 1 and 2. Award-winning journalist Charles Kuralt became a household name for his On the Road segments, first airing on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, and then for his stint as the first host of CBS News Sunday Morning. Beginning in 1967, Kuralt and his small CBS television crew traversed America’s byways by motor home in search of the unusual and overlooked stories of ordinary people from the nation’s back roads. The resulting segments serve as a reminder of simpler times and of the forgotten elements that make American life worth celebrating. This DVD 3-volume boxed set includes 14 episodes with a total of 57 classic On the Road pieces, and an exclusive 55 min. interview with longtime Kuralt and On the Road cameraman, Isadore Bleckman (www.AcornOnline.com, $39.99)
During the 20 years Kuralt wandered America’s back roads, beginning in 1967, he and his small crew logged more than a million miles and wore out six motor homes. For his heartfelt reporting on the lives of everyday people, Kuralt won an Emmy® and three Peabody Awards and became celebrated in his nearly four-decade career as a breath of fresh air in a world of endlessly gloomy news stories.
Kindhearted, avuncular, and unquenchably curious, Kuralt pulled off the road for all sorts of people: horse traders and hex-sign painters, teachers and tinkerers, singing mailmen and steamboat captains, sociable folks and loners (like the man who lived on a glacier in the shadow of Mt. McKinley). By shining a spotlight on those who had gone unnoticed, Kuralt revealed that each of us is noteworthy.
Time capsules of a bygone era, these gentle stories are reminders of what makes America great. They remain deeply meaningful, poignant, and truthful today.
Originally compiled for broadcast by the Travel Channel, each episode in this set contains 3-5 On the Road segments. Kuralt’s On the Road pieces define authentic Americana, celebrating everyday, extraordinary and unsung individuals.
