In wartime, an ordinary woman finds new courage
SILVER SPRING, MD; January 15, 2008 —Acorn Media announces the March 11, 2008 DVD debut of Housewife, 49, a stirring new drama that shows the war as both an ordeal and an opportunity for an ordinary 49-year-old Lancashire housewife. With no U.S. broadcast scheduled yet, the BAFTA award-winning drama is available to U.S. audiences for the first time.
Soon after England declared war on Germany in 1939, Lancashire housewife Nella Last began writing a diary as part of a public project. Inspired by her published diaries, Housewife, 49 depicts the hardships and terror of wartime as well as its liberating effects. Amid the hardships of food rations and air raids, Nella’s volunteer work for the war effort fills her with an exhilarating sense of purpose. She also gains the confidence to cope with her son’s enlistment and confront her domineering husband for the first time.
Written by and starring beloved British performer Victoria Wood (Dinnerladies, Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV) - who brings pathos and wit to a role that won her a BAFTA for best actress -Housewife, 49 presents a moving glimpse into life on the home front through the eyes of a resolute woman gradually awakening to life. Housewife, 49 also won the BAFTA award for Best Drama.
Housewife, 49 is inspired by Nella Last’s War: The Second World War Diaries of “Housewife, 49,” a collection of Last’s real diaries from the period, and co-stars Emmy®-nominated actor David Threlfall (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Shameless, Patriot Games).
Special Features: Insert with background on the U.K.’s Mass-Observation project, the source of Last’s diaries; text interview with Victoria Wood; and cast filmographies.
