Silver Spring, MD — Featuring a star-studded collection dramatizing two of Evelyn Waugh’s darkly humorous novels, The Evelyn Waugh Collection arrives on DVD from Acorn Media on February 2, 2010. With a keen eye for the absurd, Evelyn Waugh (Brideshead Revisited) took unerring aim at the foibles of British society. This collection brings together faithful adaptations of two of his most brilliant—and biting—satires, Oscar®-nominated A Handful of Dust and Scoop ($39.99, www.AcornOnline.com). Casts include Kristin Scott Thomas in her breakthrough role, Alec Guinness, Rupert Graves, Stephen Fry, Michael Maloney, Anjelica Huston, and Judi Dench in a BAFTA-winning role.

A Handful of Dust was released theatrically in 1988, and Scoop aired on Masterpiece Theatre in 1990.

A Handful of Dust
An upper-crust British marriage comes undone in this dark comedy, starring Oscar®-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) and James Wilby (Maurice). Brenda and Tony Last spend their days flitting between social engagements and renovating their monstrous mansion in the country. But when Brenda begins an affair with an idle young rake (Rupert Graves, The Forsyte Saga), their apparent life of ease takes a tragic turn.

Directed and co-written by Charles Sturridge, who also directed the acclaimed television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited; this production’s all-star cast is complemented by lush cinematography and lavish, Oscar®-nominated costumes. Co-starring Anjelica Huston, Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, and Alec Guinness, the stellar cast delivers delicately nuanced performances, conveying Waugh’s penetrating wit and devastating social critique.

Scoop
An uproarious send-up of politics and the press, Scoop chronicles the misadventures of William Boot (Michael Maloney, Truly, Madly, Deeply)—an innocent, wide-eyed nature columnist thrust into the role of war correspondent. Sent to cover a revolution in the dusty African republic of Ishmaelia, Boot encounters no actual fighting but a veritable army of eccentrics: feckless journalists, devious government ministers, and scheming ex-pats. Most importantly, he becomes captivated by Kätchen—the beautiful but fickle wife of a wayward geologist—who clearly has an agenda of her own.

With its smart script and delightful cast, this adaptation captures all the withering humor of Waugh’s classic novel. Scoop also stars Denholm Elliott (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Michael Hordern (Shogun), and Donald Pleasence (Halloween). Timelessly relevant, this pitch-perfect farce mercilessly skewers politicians, the press, and a gullible public.
