ENEMY AT THE DOOR

Series 1 on DVD February 24, 2009

It takes more courage to stay than to escape

Silver Spring, MD — Enemy at the Door, Series 1, a gripping series exploring the human drama of the long Nazi siege of Britain’s Channel Islands during WWII, arrives on DVD from Acorn Media on February 24, 2009. Crackling with suspense and intrigue, masterful performances, intelligent writing, and exacting historical detail, Enemy at the Door captures one of the most dramatic and little-known stories of the war. The late 1970s series stars Alfred Burke (Public Eye), Bernard Horsfall (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) and Emily Richard (Empire of the Sun), with guest stars including John Nettles (Midsomer Murders), Alun Armstrong (New Tricks), Joss Ackland, and the acting debut of Anthony Stewart Head (TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

After Nazi Germany invades the British Channel Islands in the summer of 1940, the occupiers and the occupied settle into an uneasy coexistence as both sides wrestle with the conflicts of living with the enemy. When does cooperation become collaboration for islanders just trying to survive? How tolerant can the German commandant be before falling under the suspicious eye of Berlin?

This classic British drama series tells of the stresses and strains, loyalties and loves of civilians and soldiers alike, in a world where shades of gray blur the hard line between black and white. Passion battles against restraint. Pragmatism struggles with principle. And internal conflicts rage as fiercely as those on the battlefield. Ultimately, both sides find they are compromised as much by the actions of their compatriots as they are by the enemy that is always at the door. Told in two 13-episode series, Enemy at the Door has the scope to fully develop characters and events related to the five-year occupation that lasted from the height to the end of the war.

Combining the highly popular genres of period drama and World War II history, Enemy at the Door ran for two series on ITV from 1978-1980 and broadcast in the U.S. on public television. The series was produced by Tony Wharmby (Bones, Lillie) and Michael Chapman (The Bill, Public Eye).
