ANGLO-SAXON ATTITUDES

Debuts on DVD July 1, 2008

"Splendid television"—The Financial Times (U.K.)
"British drama at its spectacular best"—The Globe and Mail

Silver Spring, MD; May 6, 2008 —Acorn Media announces the July 1, 2008 DVD debut of Anglo-Saxon Attitudes, a brilliant adaptation of a classic satirical novel and available to U.S. audiences for the first time. Adapted by screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones’s Diary), the award-winning mid-1990s miniseries stars Richard Johnson (The Camomile Lawn) and Tara Fitzgerald (The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill...), and features Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), Douglas Hodge (Middlemarch), Elizabeth Spriggs (Sense and Sensibility), and, in one scene, Kate Winslet (Titanic) in one of her first screen roles.

Acclaimed novelist Angus Wilson has drawn comparisons to Dickens and Swift for his colorful characters and grim, pitiless humor. This production perfectly captures Wilson’s adroit satirical sensibility. Richard Johnson gives an award-winning performance as Gerald Middleton, a disillusioned 60-year-old historian. As a student in 1912, he witnessed the unearthing of a controversial phallic idol in an archaeological dig. That find—and his subsequent affair with his best friend’s fiancée—sowed the seeds of tragedy that haunt Middleton and his wildly dysfunctional family. To gain peace with his past, Middleton determines to discover the truth about the mysterious idol and his own life’s folly.

A darkly comic, take-no-prisoners satire, Anglo-Saxon Attitudes skewers British social and academic hypocrisy to the very core.

The series won multiple awards, including the BAFTA for Best TV Drama Serial (1993) and Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award (1992).

Special Features: Biography of screenwriter Andrew Davies, program previews, and cast filmographies.
